Inquiry into second West Mercia cell blade incident
The police watchdog is investigating how a man detained under the Mental Health Act was able to smuggle a razor blade into his cell.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission said the man had tried to harm himself after being taken into custody at Hereford.
The 54-year-old had been arrested on Monday evening after he was found cutting his wrists near a supermarket.
The watchdog is investigating a similar incident two weeks ago in Worcester.
A 48-year-old man had been found with a bladed item in a Worcester police station.
IPCC spokeswoman Rebecca Marsh said she had decided an inquiry was appropriate as it was the second time recently that someone had smuggled a blade into West Mercia Police custody.
"We have consistently said police cells are not the most appropriate places of safety for people with mental health issues," she said.
