Government's spin bill rises to nearly £400m
Gordon Brown's government is spending more on advertising and public relations than Tony Blair's, new figures have disclosed.
"Official figures showed that central government spent a total of £391 million on advertising, marketing, PR and other presentational work in 2007-08.
The total is up by £53 million on the previous year, when it was £338 million - a rise of almost 16 per cent.
When he took office last year, Mr Brown pledged a new sort of politics and sought to distance himself from his predecessor, who was frequently accused of being too heavily involved in spin and presentation.
But since last June, Mr Brown has faced repeated charges that he is at least as inclined to spin as Mr Blair".
Why is the taxpayer funding government lies to the tune of £400M? If the government told the truth and the public demanded the truth, this money could build a hospital, school or prison.

What particular lies were you referring to, John?
I can name one big lie they bothgot into, over the little question of 1991 and 1993, Bob, not forgetting 1997.
John
Not relevant to the post but simply thanking you for having James aka "this strange man staying in my house."
You too are a good man.
I second Calum but add him to the list for taking the time to thank you( which I was going to do ,but was told to leave you alone LOL)
British men are so bossy.
And that's no spin! :)
John,
Labour has 'broken' Britain, is out of touch with reality and public opinion. They've blown away trust and are finished.
British taxpayers are also paying hefty EU fines - Labour's exceeded borrowing limits.
One thing's for sure, they'll continue to waste millions of taxpayer's money trying to stay in power ! Bunch of lunatics ....
John,
Thank you for your work and honesty on all fronts. You're a good 'un !
John,
I read recently that Labour spends millions on TV programmes - barely visible Home Office logo appears at the end. Big Brother brainwashing was seen to be the aim.
bob piper,
Can you give any examples of the Government's honesty ?
John,
As shown in an earlier article, 'private companies' are given taxpayers money to build new prisons.
As someone pointed out, it'd be interesting the check the board of directors.
A 3A's commentator did regarding PFI's - NHS (private funding initiatives). Direct links with NHS committee members and BIG builders.
John,
The word "spin", "spin doctors" etc. are Labour Party inventions - alongside 'political correctness'.
The definition of "spin" is - "to invent from one's own imagination" -
"to draw out and twist" (as in the truth).
Those truly up to the job stand on their own honest merits.
Bob: I was thinking about Iraq and WMD, Northern Rock, BAE/Saudi Arabia arms scandal, Cash for Honours...
