Record number of prisoners let out early
More than 42,000 prisoners have been let out early to ease overcrowding after the releases hit record levels.
Some 2,775 inmates were released up to 18 days early last month - the highest total since the controversial scheme began in June last year.
It takes the overall total of inmates who have been let out without completing their full punishment to 42,181.
The scheme sparked outrage last month when it emerged three prisoners who were released early are believed to have murdered just days later.
It led to calls to end it.
Last month's total beat the previous high of 2,745 in September and suggests the rate of releases is increasing.
