Shannon Matthews kidnap accused has been attacked in prison

Michael Donovan, 40, was assaulted by an inmate after returning from court to Armley Jail, Leeds, where he is being held on remand.

He was punched twice in the face twice and appeared in the dock yesterday (fri) with a red mark below his nose.

Alan Conrad QC, his barrister, said: "Mr Donovan was assaulted and as a result of which he received facial injuries.

"The incident follows a week in which a number of things have happened to him. He has been verbally threatened and his prison identity card has been stolen in mysterious circumstances
".

I am assuming that Michael Donovan had sought protection under Prison Rule 45 (formerly Rule 43)? Unless the attacker was also subjected to protection, Leeds Prison need to be explaining how this attack was allowed to happen. It used to be the case that prison officers would either be complicit in such assaults or at least turn a blind eye to them being carried out by inmates.

Whilst the likes of bloggers Iain Dale, Dizzy Thinks and Guido, have stated that they are in support of vigilantism like this, I am firmly against it and have been since the early 1970s when I saw such attacks being carried out on a regular basis and it sickened me.

I once spoke with one of the men convicted of the Birmingham pub bombings and he said the prison officers often allowed prisoners to get a beating from other prisoners as a way of covering up the marks from their own brutal attacks on them.

Bob: I know all of the B6. The horror there was that they got rough treatment from the police, then the prison officers, and then by prisoners doing the prison officers dirty work for them or currying favour from them.

Winson Green would be used to send prisoners from the Dispersal Prisons, via "The Ghost Train" to get a good "kicking in".

In addition to the assaults, prison officers would also use administrative measures as personal punishments against those prisoners they did not like for whatever reason.

If true, it's taken a long time ....

Police findings and reports in Shannon's case have been as misconstrued as in Madeleine's. The uncle made a suicide attempt shortly after the family were arrested - he admitted they planned hiding Shannon in the hope of receiving £1.3 m McCann style - under false pretences.

Nulabor's the first British government to habitually override police findings and reports - 'fired' Head of Scotland Yard in the process.

Speaking of 'encouraging vigilantism': http://prisonersvoice.blogspot.com/2008/07/couple-admit-hurling-dog-from-balcony.html

Oh so now you have to claim Rule 45 and not 43.
Good job I know that, I hate to think where I might have ended up under the new Rule 43.
I would have thought his solicitor might have suggested it to him, after all with the suspicion of child kidnapping hanging over him he is not going to be the most popular prisoner on the remand wing.
Still perhaps at the end of the trial the Judge might say something.
